- Lenca leader Berta Caceres, who had spent years fighting against a project to build the Agua Zarca Dam along the Gualcarque River, as quoted by Dominican Sr. Doris Regan who attended her funeral along with thousands of people March 5. Caceres was murdered at her home March 3. Nine days later, another activist, Nelson García, was killed.
