Catholics stand up for fired, pregnant teacher

Montana Catholics delivered a petition to chancery in Helena, Mont., this afternoon hoping to persuade Bishop George Thomas to reinstate Shaele Evenson, the Catholic school teacher in Butte, Mont., who lost her job when the superintendent of schools learned she was unmarried and pregnant.

Unfortunately, Bishop TK couldn’t receive their petition because he was out of town. It may not matter anyway, according to the diocesan spokesman Dan Bartleson.

“I appreciate your coming out in the cold. The bishop will take it under advisement. It’s unlikely right now that he will reverse the decision made in Butte,” spokesperson Dan Bartleson said.

“I am deeply saddened by these recent events, and caught between the values of upholding the Catholic identity of our schools, while desiring to provide pastoral outreach and understanding to the teacher,” Thomas said in a written statement.
